Vysasa, the compiler of the vedas, summoned Brahma, the creator, before him and requested for someone to write down the story of the Mahabharata.

Brahma told Vysasa to summon Ganapati (Ganesha). And once he did, the story of the Mahatarata was told and passed down oraly through the scribes.
